While many supporters are already projecting Segun Ogunwuyi as a potential candidate for the governorship of Oyo State under the People’s Democratic Party, the ongoing leadership crisis within the party raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored.
Ogunwuyi’s political résumé is impressive. From serving in the Oyo State House of Assembly (2011–2015) to representing his constituency in the House of Representatives (2015–2019), he has steadily built experience in governance. He also served as Executive Assistant on Investments to Governor Seyi Makinde, later becoming Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPA) from 2019 to 2021, before his current role as Chief of Staff to the Governor.
These roles positioned him as an active player in the Omituntun 1.0 and Omituntun 2.0 administrations and a strong figure within the Makinde political structure in Oyo State.
However, beyond state politics, the internal struggle within the PDP at the national level remains a major factor. The lingering dispute among factions loyal to Nyesom Wike and other party leaders over who controls the authentic structure of the party continues to generate legal battles and political uncertainty.
For aspirants hoping to contest elections under the PDP platform, this crisis raises a critical question: which faction will ultimately control the party structure and candidate nominations?
Until these disputes are resolved, anyone seeking elective office under the PDP banner may need to proceed with caution and carefully assess the political terrain.
Furthermore, the broader national political landscape cannot be ignored. The influence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu across Nigeria’s political system has reshaped alliances and power dynamics within multiple parties.
Many analysts believe that the current political configuration may make it difficult for opposition parties to fully stabilize until the end of the present political cycle.
In this context, while Ogunwuyi’s ambition and credentials may resonate with many in Oyo State, the final outcome may depend not only on his political strength at home but also on how the PDP resolves its internal leadership crisis nationally.
