Customs Officers Allegedly Shoot Driver Dead in Osun

A driver whose identity has not yet been confirmed was allegedly shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in Osun State.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Onibueja area in Ido-Osun, close to a police checkpoint.

According to eyewitness accounts, the security operatives, who were said to be dressed in plain clothes, had been pursuing the driver from the Iwo end of the road before opening fire on his vehicle.

A resident of the area, who identified himself simply as Sunday, said the shooting drew a large crowd to the scene.

He explained that the driver was heading towards Osogbo when the operatives fired several shots at his vehicle.

“The man died instantly behind the steering wheel. The car was riddled with bullets, and people quickly gathered at the scene. The incident happened close to a police roadblock,” Sunday told journalists.

He added that the shooters were not in uniform, making it difficult for residents to immediately identify which security agency they belonged to. The development reportedly sparked anger among people in the area.

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and stated that the suspected shooters were operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Ojelabi also disclosed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said the police would provide further details to the public after completing a preliminary briefing on the case.
