There is a cold war between the US Government and the World Trade Organisation over the emergence of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as WTO DG.
TruetellsNigeria reports that the US government on Wednesday questioned the emergence of Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as WTO DG.
Reacting to the US claims, the World Trade Organisation has maintained that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s candidate for the office of the director-general of the organisation, has the best chance at getting a consensus.
In a tweet after the head of delegates meeting on Wednesday in Geneva, the WTO said the result of the consultations is now out.
After the meeting WTO spokesperson Keith Rockwell said, “the candidate that had the best chance of attaining a consensus of the membership is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria. Consultations on the way forward will start immediately”.
The US has, however, opposed the selection of Okonjo-Iweala, leaning towards the South Korean candidate Yoo Myung-hee.
The WTO will reconvene in November 2020 to decide the way forward.
