Political tensions in Rivers State appear to be escalating ahead of the 2027 governorship race, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has firmly ruled out supporting Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term.
Speaking during a pre-convention meeting with APC delegates in Abuja, Wike made it clear that he would not repeat what he described as the “mistake” of backing Fubara in 2023. He stressed that no amount of pressure, inducement, or political persuasion would change his stance.
According to him, the fallout between both men stems from what he views as betrayal and ingratitude, which he blamed for the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. The once-allied leaders have since been locked in a prolonged power struggle that has destabilised the state’s political landscape.
Wike also warned politicians against invoking his name to advance their governorship ambitions, cautioning that he was closely monitoring such moves. He urged his loyalists to remain cautious and avoid being misled by opportunistic actors ahead of the next election cycle.
Despite criticisms and opposition, the FCT minister maintained that he remains unfazed, stating that political conflict is part of his strength. He added that he values loyalty and expects beneficiaries of political support to remain appreciative even after leaving office.
He further commended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, for their loyalty, noting that they endured financial hardship rather than compromise their political stance.
Meanwhile, Bomah Iyaye has dismissed claims that he has declared interest in the Rivers governorship race or secured Wike’s backing. He described such reports as false, reiterating his focus on his role at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Uncertainty also surrounds Governor Fubara’s political future, as he has yet to publicly confirm whether he will seek re-election. However, sources close to the governor insist he remains a strong contender with significant support and will soon clarify his position.
