Why National Assembly Roof Is Still Leaking Despite N30 Billion Allocated For Renovation

The roof of the National Assembly is reportedly leaking again despite an ongoing massive renovation of the edifice.

Truetells Nigeria gathered that the recent development had left a doubts in the minds of most users and staff of the structure, who are wondering why the roofs should still leak after N30 billion was allocated for the renovation of the structure about a year ago.

Recall the lawmakers in the 9th Assembly had approved N30 billion to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) in the 2021 fiscal year for comprehensive renovation.

This was after they made a case for renovating the edifice that had deteriorated over the years.

Hitherto, the lobby of the National Assembly was flooded due to the leaky roof of the White House, which houses the two chambers.

But in April 2022, the renovation contract was awarded to Visible Construction Limited.

However, a year into the renovation, reports still emerged that the roofs of the National Assembly were still leaking.

Giving the reason why it’s still so, the Project Engineer, Tajudeen Olanipekun, said the leakages would soon stop as specialised chemicals for the affected expansion joints would quickly be applied.

He told pressmen on Wednesday that  “The report on roof leakage in National Assembly to us at Visible Construction is like marking script of a student still writing his or her examination.

“Renovation work on the entire complex is still being carried out. It is when we have finished the work that report on roof leakage can be written, which to us would never happen as the problem would be thing of the past by the time it is handed over to FCDA that gave us the job.

“There should be no cause for alarm from any quarters as regards the project since Engineers from FCDA are also with us.”
