The World Athletics has denied the reports that Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan has been cleared of doping and given the all-clear to defend her title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary next week.
Nicole Jeffery, World Athletics’ Head of Communications, made this clarification in an e-mail message to journalists, who have been accredited to cover the 19th Championships, which starts this weekend.
“Please be advised – reports appearing in Nigeria that say Tobi Amusan has been cleared to compete in Budapest are wrong.
“No decision has been made in this case yet. When a decision is made, it will be announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit,” wrote Jeffery in the message.
Recall that Tobi’s name was excluded by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria from participating in the upcoming competition billed to hold from August 19 to August 27, 2023, as a result of the doping investigation.
The AIU has said a decision regarding the matter will be made before the start of the World Championships.
In July, Amusan was charged with an anti-doping rules violation for missing three drug tests in the span of 12 months.
With the Athletics Integrity Unit to hold a hearing on her case before the World Championships, Amusan has vowed to fight the charges and prove her innocence.
