UNIJOS Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Salary Delays

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos branch, has embarked on an indefinite strike following the non-payment of lecturers’ salaries.

The decision was announced on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, after members raised concerns over the failure to receive their March salaries, as well as the omission of the Earned Academic Allowance.

As part of the industrial action, the union has directed all lecturers to immediately withdraw from academic activities, including lectures, examinations, and official meetings. The leadership stated that the move was approved by both the union’s National Executive Council and the branch congress.

According to the union, members had exercised patience in anticipation of a resolution, but the situation remained unchanged.

In a statement, ASUU urged its members to comply fully with the directive, stressing that due process had been followed before arriving at the decision.

The union clarified that the delay was not caused by the university’s internal processes, noting that the bursary department had already completed its obligations. Instead, it attributed the issue to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, which is responsible for releasing the funds.

ASUU further warned that continued delays in salary payments could threaten stability within the academic system and disclosed that a monitoring team would be set up to ensure total compliance with the strike order.
