U.S. election live: Ongoing coverage as Americans vote for their next president

The long U.S. election campaign comes to an end on Tuesday, Nov. 3 as millions of Americans will head to their local polling location and either re-elect Donald Trumpor choose Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.

Americans are heading to the polls on Election Day to determine the balance of power in Washington and state houses around the country, marking the end of a bitter, bruising campaign season that was upended by the pandemic.

The first polls opened at 6 a.m. ET and minimal disruptions had been reported as of the early afternoon. More than 100 million Americans have already voted early, amounting to 72.8% of the total votes cast in 2016, according to the U.S. ElectionsProject.
