Tyres detach from speeding truck kills LAWMA staff

Olalekan Ogunmakin, a staff of the Lagos Waste Management Authority in Ijora, has died after two tyres detached from a moving truck and crushed him to death in the Alaka area of Lagos State.

Ogunmakin, 61, was out and about on Monday, May 27, when the tragic incident occurred.

The blow from the heavy truck tyres left him critically injured.

After the accident, the truck driver did not stop, instead, he sped off with what tyres were left on his vehicle.

Other road users rushed the victim to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A source told Punch, “The man (Ogunmakin) was attached to the LAWMA office. He was going somewhere when the tyres from the truck that was at top speed ran into him.

“The truck driver did not wait; some people said he knew what happened while some other persons said he might not know what happened because the truck was still moving on other tyres.

“When people in the area rushed him to hospital, they confirmed that he died due to the injuries he sustained from the accident.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted, confirmed that following the accident, Ogunmakin was rushed to the Randle Hospital in the Surulere area of the state.

He explained that the doctor on duty confirmed him dead, adding that efforts were on to arrest the fleeing driver of the truck.

Hundeyin said, “The incident happened on May 27, 2024, around 10.24 pm, at Alaka, inward the National Stadium. It involved an unknown truck driven by a driver and our investigation revealed that two tyres of an unknown truck pulled out suddenly in motion and hit a 61-year-old man, Olalekan Ogunmakin, attached to the LAWMA office, Ijora.

“The man sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Randle Hospital, Surulere, Lagos, for treatment.

“He died and this was confirmed by the doctors on duty.

“The corpse was deposited at the same hospital for preservation and an investigation is ongoing for the arrest of the truck driver.”
