The reigniting rivalry between the two well-known Nigerian Afrobeat icons David Adeleke, better known as Davido, and Damini Ogulu, well known as Burna Boy, has continued to make waves in the entertainment industry.
In a recent interview, Davido rekindled the feud by asserting that Burna Boy was a “new cat” in the Nigerian music scene and that he had achieved popularity before him.
“Everyone is aware now. One among the first was me. I feel good seeing new cats like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Mayorkun, you know, a lot of fresh cats coming, killing it, and Asake, who was on my record. Wizkid and I were among the first young artists to blow up. Therefore, I believe that Afrobeat’s future is in good hands, Davido had added.
However, Davido’s remark rankled Burna Boy’s supporters, reigniting a heated argument in the music business.
Music fans have been at odds over the superiority of Davido and Burna Boy much to the dispute between the fan bases of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo over who is the Greatest of All Time.
Davido’s supporters assert that the singer’s ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ album, published in 2012, was a larger hit while some fans believe that Burna Boy has been well-known in the industry since he launched his debut album, ‘LIFE’ in 2013.
In an interview with DAILY POST on Thursday, Phil Roberts, president of the Rock Music Federation, claimed that Davido was not the only Nigerian musician who had contributed to the development of Afrobeats.
“As you can see, they are all bringing honor to Nigerians abroad, but it’s a business. You must consider how to make sure no one can ascend higher than you if you want to stay at the top of your game.
So, it’s entertainment because, if they don’t spark that kind of debate, I doubt they will become popular. Everyone aspires to have a successful career. So, everything is about competition.
“Nothing is present. They are simply providing you with entertainment because even if you only listened to their music, the joy would be missing.
How would you characterize Davido’s role in popularizing Afrobeat? Each of them has been contributing in some way.
“They all increased its global exposure. African music is called afrobeat. So which of the two is more African? All of these things fit into our genre and we are all African. These beats have therefore existed even though they have all managed to spread throughout the entire world.
Because there are multiple elements that contribute to a soup’s sweetness as it is being prepared, he explained, “I give it to all of them, including Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, because it’s a collective effort.”
Simeon Sunday, a well-known media figure in Abuja, claimed that Davido’s remark about Burna Boy was not entirely false.
He claims that Burna Boy was not present when Davido’s Omo Baba Olowo album debuted on the music scene in 2012.
Burna Boy entered the mainstream of music one year after Davido, according to Sunday, a.k.a. Big Daddy of Abuja.
According to Sunday, Burna Boy only had an impact in 2019 when he first entered the mainstream music scene.
“When you consider the rivalry between these two Afrobeats heavyweights, especially in light of David’s description of Damini as a new cat, you’d realize that this feeling of Davido’s superiority over Burna Boy didn’t just begin recently. Their beef can be traced back to 2019 when Burna tweeted that he is the biggest African artist after Fela because no one paved the way for him, to which Davido replied that he and other artists paved the way for people like
To be quite honest, Davido wasn’t mistaken when he described Burna as a new cat. With his 2012 album Omo Baba Olowo, which featured hit songs like Dami Duro, Back When, Ekuro, and others, Davido broke into the mainstream.
“The query is, ‘Where was Burna all this time?'” He was still far from the creek. After Davido’s album, Burna’s single “Like to Party” from the L. I. F. E album seemed to go widespread. However, until his major break in 2019, Burna typically struggles after the LIFE album.
With Burna currently outshining Davido with his stadium tours across the globe, he claimed that it wouldn’t be entirely inappropriate for David to refer to Burna as a “new cat,” just as 2Face, Dbanj, and others might refer to David and Burna as “New cats.”
