Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have attacked a church service at the Celestial Church of God in the Felele area of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, killing two persons and injuring three worshippers.
Witnesses said the terrorists, locally dubbed as bandits, who were fully armed, attacked the church during the service and started shooting sporadically which made everyone to scamper for safety.
It was learnt that two people died on the spot, while the injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.
He said, “When they entered, they started shooting at everyone outside the church. I went and hid inside a cassava farm. What I saw yesterday was like an action film. Kogi is no longer safe.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, William Ovye-Aya, confirmed the incident on Monday.
He said, “It was a distress call that the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Felele, received that hoodlums invaded a Celestial Church behind the NNPC Mega Station and they began shooting. Two people were confirmed dead in a hospital, while three are receiving treatment.
“The Commissioner of Police has deployed our operatives and ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigation to commence investigation to unravel the cause of the attack with a view to arresting the perpetrators.”
