After the rescue of seven kidnapped victims by a joint operation involving troops from the Nigerian Army’s 3 Brigade, the Nigerian Air Force, and the police, terrorists have struck again, abducting 12 residents in new attacks across two communities in Kano State.
The successful operation last Friday resulted in the rescue of the abductees, though a 60-year-old woman was killed by the terrorists during the confrontation.
Major Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, confirmed that troops tracked the fleeing terrorists towards Kankia Local Government Area in Katsina State but lost their trail.
The earlier military operation was detailed by Major Zubairu:
“The troops pursued the bandits along their withdrawal route towards Rimaye, engaged them with a high volume of fire, and swiftly rescued the abducted victims. However, four of the kidnapped victims remain unaccounted for,” Zubairu said.
However, the relief was short-lived. On Sunday night, terrorists launched a subsequent assault on Unguwar Tsamiya in Faruruwa village and the Dabawa community, both situated in the Shanono Local Government Area.
Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, a local community leader, stated that around 7 p.m., vigilante members sounded an alarm as a group of bandits, riding approximately 23 motorcycles, approached the area. He mentioned that residents promptly notified security agencies, but no assistance arrived during the entire attack.
“Throughout Sunday, there was no presence of any security personnel,” Bagobiri lamented. “We called before the operation, during the attack, and after they left with the abductees, but none of the security agencies responded.”
This renewed violence occurs shortly after the Kano State Police Command issued new directives, including a ban on conveying passengers on motorcycles and restricting commercial tricycles from operating between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., all aimed at combating the rising insecurity throughout the state. The status of the newly abducted victims is currently unknown.
