Tecno has launched its first flip phone, the Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G in Lagos, the product was unveiled by its band ambassador Tiwa Savage.
According to Tecno the Phantom V Flip 5G is the fastest charging phone in the world with Mystic Dawn colourway that looks rather slick with a leather rear panel that has a lychee-pattern design. It is also sold in an Iconic Black colour option.
The folding phone doesn’t feel very heavy to hold and has metallic edges that feel cool to the touch. The sole 8GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration.
The Phantom V Flip 5G sports a 6.9-inch flexible AMOLED screen with a crease that is difficult to detect — it’s there and you can feel it when you’re scrolling inside an app, but it’s barely perceptible when you’re looking at the display. The display has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, and content is mostly visible when you’re outdoors, except in direct sunlight.
According to Tecno, the ‘Hoverlock’ design drop-shaped hinge on the Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G is capable of staying open between 30 degrees and 150 degrees, and can be folded up to 2 lakh times. It is possible to open the phone with just one hand but there’s a bit of resistance, which means it’s probably safer to use both hands.
Tecno has equipped this smartphone with two external cameras — a 64-megapixel RGBW sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field-of-view — located around the circular outer display. On the inside, the handset is equipped with a 32-megapixel front camera with a micro-slit dual-flash LED light.

The Tecno Phantom V Flip is like other flip phones in the market with Tecno’s own personalisation. It has a leather back with dual-tone colours. The Mystic Dawn colour option has two shades of purple. The Iconic Black colour is simple with some stitched lines. The frame is made of aluminium and is curved and shiny.
The Aero-space grade steel hinge helps fold the Phantom V Flip fold completely flat along with durability. According to GSMarena, the flip phone however does not unfold completely flat but at 178 degrees. The steel hinge is sturdy with enough friction and can hold the phone between 30° and 150°. The hinge leaves a crease of less than or equal to 0.11mm. It can also withstand up to 200,000 plus folds.
The back of the flip phone has a circular cover screen on the back with the rear cameras surrounding it. Tecno says the design is inspired by asteroids orbiting the planet. Many people might not prefer or might take time to get used to circular screens. The screen can display and be used for many things from notifications, calls, messages, weather, time etc.
On the front, there is a centred hole-punch cutout display which houses the selfie camera. On the top right corner of the main screen, there is a dual flash which is very bright and helps in crisp photos. The bezels are a bit thick on the top but are equal on the sides and bottom.
The Tecno Phantom V Flip has a foldable LTPO AMOLED display. The main screen is 6.9-inch with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,640 pixels, delivering a pixel density of about 413 pixels per inch (ppi). The main display supports a refresh rate of 120Hz and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The cover display measures 1.32-inch and uses an AMOLED screen with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and a peak brightness of 800 nits.
The Tecno Phantom V Flip is powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 8050 chipset, built on a 6-nanometer architecture. Its octa-core CPU configuration, including a high-performance Cortex-A78 core running at 3.0 GHz, along with three Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz, delivers a good overall performance. Complementing it is the Mali-G77 GPU, enhancing graphics performance. It runs on Android 13 with the HIOS 13.5 interface operating system.
It’s equipped with one RAM option of 6 GB and paired with one storage option of 256 GB. The phone also incorporates a virtual RAM feature, enabling an additional 8 GB of RAM to be utilised from the storage, leading to enhanced performance
The Tecno Phantom V Flip features a dual rear camera setup. The main camera is 64MP which offers various shooting modes like portrait, slow motion, and panorama. Additionally, the rear camera supports 4K video recording at 30fps and 1,080p video at 30/60fps, ensuring high-quality video capture.
The phone also offers a range of impressive camera features, including slow-motion capabilities at 1,080p@120fps and time-lapse options at 4K/2K/1,080P. Additionally, it includes features like zoom, AI focus, HDR, video filter, AI cam, portrait mode, super night mode, AR shot, wide selfie, time-lapse video recording, and video bokeh.
The Tecno Phantom V Flip houses a 32MP front camera that excels in producing sharp and vibrant selfies. It supports various shooting modes including portrait and slow motion. The front camera also records video at 1,080p@30/60fps and 2K@30fps. It also has features such as video HDR, video filter, video bokeh, and video makeup.
The Tecno Phantom V Flip comes equipped with a 4,000 mAh battery, and when it comes to charging, the device supports 45W wired fast charging. For connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6, operating on dual bands for efficient internet connectivity and Bluetooth 5.1 for seamless wireless communication. The device offers an impressive audio experience with stereo speakers. It accommodates dual SIM cards (Nano-SIM).
In terms of sensors, it includes a geomagnetic sensor, light sensor, accelerometer, gyro sensor, hall sensor, and proximity sensor. The device also supports step counting and features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for secure and convenient unlocking. Powering all these features is a robust 4,000 mAh battery, and when it comes to charging, the device supports 45W wired fast charging for quick and efficient power replenishment.
