Pa Philip Akintoye development foundation (PAPADEF) on Friday organized a programme to mark the 2020 international day of education with a school sensitization program, with the theme “role of education for peace in preventing sexual abuse in schools”.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24th January as International Day of Education in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.
The event which took place Essy Gold college hall ogudu, attracted speakers who sensitized the students on the role of education and also sexual abuse prevention.
According to the program manager PAPADEF, Eweka Yvonne Ogieomo, the purpose of the event is to catch the younger ones from JSS 1-3 and sensitize them on child sexual abuse.
“We are marking the international day of education with a sensitization program, looking at the role of education for peace.
The purpose of focusing on jss1-3 students for this year celebration is to catch them young and teach them why education is important in peace building and also equipping them with information on how to protect themselves from sexual assault.
We believe we can catch them young, which is why we are focusing on the youths and teenagers who are the victims of sexual abuse.” She said
Also speaking a youth and sustainable development advocate, Opeloyeru Adams said that it is important teach the young ones about goal setting and the important of being time conscious.
“ We believe in quality education and 24th January is a day set aside to educate everyone in the world .
Our aim is to imbibe the right mentality towards education in this young ones so that they will know that education is important to be the leaders of tomorrow.
Also the will learn more about the sustainable development goal which is quality education.
“ He said
A trauma councillor of Mirabel Center, Joy Onorisa , said that the best way of sensitizing youths about child sexual abuse is to teach them about their body parts.
“ The best way of fighting against child sexual abuse is to teach them about their body and how to speak up when they are being sexual abused.
We always try to provide support for people that have been sexually abused, Because children are the victims to 90% of sexual abuse cases.
We are here today to sensitize this child on what sexual abuse is and how best to protect themselves against abuses” She said.
