Two Nigerian football legends, Nwakwo Kanu and Finidi George will work together at Enyimba for the third time in their football journey.
Nwakwo Kanu and Finidi George were teammates at the national team level. They were also teammates at Dutch club Ajax where they lifted the UEFA Champions League together in 1995.
In the last two seasons, Finidi George has been the coach of Enyimba football club and has pushed the Aba-based club to return to the reckoning in both domestic and continental football.
In the 2022-2023 season, George helped Enyimba to lift the Nigeria Professional Football League title for the 9th time in the history of the league. He also qualified them for the CAF Champions League.
As for Nwakwo Kanu, he has been busy with brand ambassadorial duties since he retired from football. But the new governor of Abia state, Alex Otti has decided to bring him into the leadership of Enyimba of Aba.
From the coming 2023-2024 season, Kanu will serve as the Supervisor of the Aba Elephants while George will remain the head coach of the club.
Kane’s appointment came after the governor decided to dissolve the old board of the club which led to the removal of Nigeria Football Federation’s vice president, Felix Anyansi-Agwu as the club’s supervisor.
Anyansi-Agwu held that position for over two decades. Under his leadership, Enyimba won two CAF Champions League and nine league titles. Hence, Kanu is expected to surpass the feat of the veteran football administrator.
“A sporting legend and former Super Eagles star, Kanu Nwankwo, has been appointed to supervise Enyimba Football Club to strengthen the team and make it win more laurels for the state,” a statement from the state government read.
