The embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu may be released on bail tomorrow, Thursday, 2nd December.
This is as it was gathered that the Biafra agitator has been scheduled for an emergency court hearing in the case between him and the federal government of Nigeria.
Truetells Nigeria recalls Kanu is facing an amended 7-count charge bordering on treasonable felony and acts of terrorism which were brought against him by the government after his re-arrest and repatriation to Nigeria in June this year.
He has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) from where he attends his court sessions in Abuja amidst heavy security.
However, according to Sahara Reporters on Wednesday, quoting a lawyer for the government said to be involved in the case, Kanu may be released on bail tomorrow.
The source was quoted to have said the IPOB leader is scheduled for an emergency court hearing tomorrow and the issue of his bail may come up.
“Nnamdi Kanu scheduled for an emergency hearing tomorrow that could lead to his release on bail.
“This is in response to Igbo elders’ request for his release,” a source was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
It will be recalled that a delegation of Igbo leaders led by former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, had requested the unconditional release of Kanu when they met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja on November 19, 2021.
Though the President had described their request as difficult, with the Nigerian leader stating that interfering in Kanu’s trial will be unlawful and contravene the powers of the Judiciary, he promised to look into their request.
Buhari had said, “You’ve made an extremely difficult demand on me as leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious. In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the Judiciary. God has spared you, and given you a clear head at this age, with very sharp memory. A lot of people half your age are confused already. But the demand you made is heavy. I will consider it.”
