Some candidates of political parties ahead of the 2023 general elections have been killed by gunmen, while some have lost their lives due to other reasons.
The insecurity situation in the country has not seen only politicians killed, as their aides, and supporters have also been victims of attacks in this electoral season.
There are allegations that some of the politicians who have been killed, were murdered by opposition parties who feel threatened by their political presence.
However, security agencies, a few days before the presidential and national assembly elections, assured Nigerians of their safety during the electoral process.
The security agencies after the National Security Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday expressed their readiness for the 2023 elections.
Naija News has deemed it fit to list some politicians who have died or been killed by gunmen a few days before the 2023 elections.
1. The senatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Enugu East senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu on the 22nd of February, 2023 was killed by unknown gunmen and burnt.
The gunmen who killed Chukwu also killed five supporters who were with him inside his car.
The incident happened at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.
2. Gunmen on the 16th of December, 2022 killed the LP candidate for Onuimo Local Government Area Constituency in Imo State.
The victim, Christopher Elehu, was killed when the gunmen invaded his house.
The gunmen also set Elehu’s house ablaze and destroyed his properties, including a motorcycle.
3. The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Professor Uche Ikonne on the 25th of January, 2023 died.
The sudden death was confirmed in a statement released by his son, Dr. Uche Ikonne.
According to him, the governorship candidate passed away in the early hours of January, 25th, 2023 the National Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.
4. The New Nigeria Peoples Party House of Representatives candidate for the Wudil-Garko federal constituency in Kano State, Kamilu Ado Isa on the 21st of February, 2023 died.
The former Assistant Comptroller General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, on Monday died days before the 2023 general election after a brief illness.
