The former Governorship aspirant in Ogun State and one-time spokesman to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has signified interest to kickoff a nationwide campaign for the national championship position of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The leading aspirant insisted that he is the best man to lead the party better than it is doing at the moment even as he called for stakeholders collaboration to drive purpose and efficiency.
Otunba Showunmi, who said this in a chat with journalists on Tuesday at Abuja airport stressed that he has a better understanding of the party than any other aspirants.
According to him, “My preparedness to clinch the PDP’s national chairmanship seat and fly its flag higher is not negotiable at all, as most people are already aware especially the leadership of our party, including our Governors, Senators, Members of House of Representatives, State Assembly lawmakers, etc, whom I hold in highest esteem will always attest to the fact that I understand the party, its principles, vision, mission and objectives of where it is headed.
“I must also add that awareness has been very high across the six geopolitical zones of the country, yet we are not resting on our oars, we would depeen our stakeholders’ engagements and move from one state to the other, sell our ideas and manifestos to all our eligible delegates for them to make informed decisions by throwing their weights behind my candidacy, and I assure them I will never disappoint them.
“Without sounding immodest, I found it convenient to say there is no one contesting for the chairmanship position of PDP that is better prepared than me to lead the party. My antecedents of merit, loyalty, humility, dedication, vocalness, consistency, purpose and integrity will definitely give me the ticket.”
While reacting to questions from newsmen on the likelihood of the contest to go “unhealthy” and “tough”, Otunba Showunmi said:
“Every competition has its tough side, and that naturally adds glamor to the beauty of democracy, and of course it also proves the seriousness of those involved in the competition, it further helps to bring distinction between the pretenders and contenders. One thing is certain, I, Otunba Segun Showunmi I am in for victory in this contest and you as journalists can as well see the seriousness and determination in me.
“However, gone are the days when people engage themselves in negative propaganda to malign their opponents, I will never be part of such unhealthy and irresponsible approach, above all the party is supreme and our extant rules are very clear on that. I don’t believe in mudslinging because it is not an inheritance but an opportunity to serve.
“We have got the backings and assurances from the party’s founding fathers and mothers, we have got their blessings and still receiving more endorsements in the last few months, they are solidly behind my political ambition of becoming the national party chairman of the PDP this is my greatest joy, I must say.
“In all the capacities where the party had in the past given me the opportunities to serve as thier Ambassador, I always have outstanding records of performance to prove my mettle. My account of stewardship are always flawless and exemplary by every standard. Meanwhile I have always drawn my strength from the holy Bible in Luke 12:48 which says “to whom much is given, much will be required.” So if anybody is against my ambition to contest the chairmanship position of the party which I doubt, it means that the person is not a true lover of the country.” Showunmi stated.
