Major Leadership Change in Nigeria Police Force as Disu Set to Replace Egbetokun

In a significant shift within Nigeria’s security apparatus, sources close to the government have revealed that Assistant Inspector-General, Abubakar Disu, will be appointed to replace Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force. This transition is part of a broader leadership adjustment aimed at enhancing the country’s security framework.

Disu, who took over as the head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos just earlier this month, brings over three decades of experience to his new role. He has previously led the Intelligence Response Team and commanded the Rapid Response Squad, making him a seasoned figure within the police force.

The decision to replace Egbetokun reportedly followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday, where he was asked to prepare handover notes. However, as of now, neither the Presidency nor police headquarters have publicly confirmed the leadership change.

Egbetokun’s tenure, which began in June 2023, has not been without controversy. His leadership became a focal point for public discourse, particularly surrounding the legislative amendments that allowed him to remain in office beyond typical retirement age.

A formal handover ceremony is anticipated to take place at Louis Edet House once the appointment is officially announced. If confirmed, this transition will represent one of the most notable changes in the police hierarchy since 2023 and could lead to further evaluations of senior command postings within the force.

As the nation watches with keen interest, stakeholders are hopeful that this leadership shift will contribute to a more effective and responsive security system in Nigeria.
