Nigerian popular Journalist, Folake Sokoya has made an urgent appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the implementation of recommendations from a Visitation Panel that investigated a series of crises at the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), now the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The call comes after a 2018 assault incident involving Sokoya and her son, Boluwatife Olowu, by a security guard named Moses Hitler, which remains unresolved.
On 11th July 2018, Sokoya and her son were assaulted by the security personnel at LASPOTECH, an event indicative of broader unrest within the institution.
In response, Governor Sanwo-Olu established a Visitation Panel to investigate the circumstances and provide recommendations to restore order and justice.
Despite the Panel’s completion of its investigation and the submission of actionable recommendations, Sokoya notes that these findings have not been made public, nor have the recommendations been implemented. This inaction leaves the victims, including Sokoya and her son, without justice or closure.
Sokoya’s petition to the Governor highlights the necessity for immediate action, urging the implementation of the Visitation Panel’s recommendations, accountability for those responsible for the assault, and the institution of measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. She stresses that the failure to act undermines the credibility of the investigative process and perpetuates a culture of impunity within LASUSTECH
The situation calls for a commitment to justice and the welfare of all stakeholders in the educational institution. The implementation of these recommendations is seen as a crucial step toward upholding human rights and ensuring the safety and integrity of the institution.
As the public awaits a response from the Governor’s office, the case underscores the need for transparency and accountability in handling such serious allegations within educational institutions.
