The Nigeria Police Force’s Anambra State Command has intensified its search for 28-year-old Eziebue Somtoochukwu, who has been wanted since March 2023 on allegations of engaging in same-sex activity, which contravenes the nation’s laws.

In a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga of the State Criminal Investigation Department, officials revealed that Mr. Somtoochukwu has remained elusive since the incident in question. Intelligence reports have prompted the renewed efforts to apprehend him.
The police allege that in March 2023, Mr. Somtoochukwu was involved in a same-sex encounter with another male, Daniel Nwankwo, at Somtoochukwu’s residence. Following this encounter, local vigilantes reportedly attacked both men. Mr. Somtoochukwu suffered injuries but managed to flee during the attack, while Mr. Nwankwo was captured and later handed to the police.
Authorities have labeled Mr. Somtoochukwu as a wanted individual since his escape. In recent developments, a police operation targeting his residence was conducted in December 2025, based on credible intelligence regarding his potential whereabouts. However, law enforcement officials reported that he was not present during the raid, suggesting he may have received prior warning from an unknown source.
The police have called on the local community, youth groups, and anyone with information concerning Mr. Somtoochukwu’s location to come forward and assist in his apprehension.
Nigeria’s legal framework harshly penalizes same-sex relationships. Under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013, such conduct is criminalized, with Southern Nigeria imposing sentences of up to 14 years in prison for consensual same-sex sexual activity. In the Northern states governed by Shari’a law, the penalties can be even more severe, potentially including the death penalty by stoning.
Individuals involved or accused of same-sex relationships in Nigeria often face severe consequences, including arrest, mob violence, and community vigilantism, frequently with inadequate protection from the authorities. The police continue to emphasize the need for public collaboration in addressing this pressing issue.
