The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi on Saturday morning deleted a social media post about how the police used forensic discoveries to arrest an alleged murder suspect in Plateau State.
In the deleted tweet, the force spokesman had praised the police experts for using shoe prints to discover the suspects behind the murder of a man, simply identified as Alhaji.
Adejobi had written, “IRT operatives use these recovered items, the shoes and the jacket, to trace the suspects who killed one Alhaji in Plateau State. Our experts lifted the prints on the shoes, and did forensic analysis of the blood stain on the jacket, which matched the blood sample of the deceased, which formed the main expert opinion and direct evidence to prosecute the culprits.
“Forensic investigation is key and fundamental to a better CJS in Nigeria. We intend to have more forensic laboratories in our state commands and FCID. Moving from analogue to digital. It’s achievable, and we shall get there,” he added.
The force spokesman’s explanation however did not go down well with some Nigerians on X platform and it elicited mixed responses from Nigerian netizens.
Given the police’s stance in the case of late musician Oladimeji Aloba, aka MohBad, a considerable number of the X users expressed doubts about the effectiveness of forensic investigations in Nigeria.
Expectedly when the force spokesperson deleted his tweet, all the reactions under it were also gone.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier claimed a toxicology test to determine the cause of death of music star, Ilerioluwa Aloba was taken to abroad because there was no facility to do it in Nigeria.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the state lost the only forensic facility to a mob attack during the #EndSARS protest in 2020.
The governor had said, “Security is not about emotion, it’s serious business. I remember I met you three years ago. Like you said, there’s no emotion. I’m standing in front of you.
There’s no emotion. It’s not emotional. We will do the job. We will do it well. These are police officers, the MohBad case is still live. They’re treating it.
“We had to take the forensics out. The forensic (laboratory) that we built that is the best in sub-Sahara Africa was burned down during #EndSARS. We have to take the test out.
They’ve done all their reports, not only when it comes back that we can tie the two together. There are people that are in detention as we speak; we have not released them.”
The Lagos Governor’s claims and other previous reactions of police on forensic analysis made a lot of Nigerians to say the spokesman was lying.
