Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to reject leaders who prioritize personal comfort over public welfare, reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s recent complaint about power failure at Jos airport.
In a post on his 𝕏 account, Obi said Tinubu’s statement validates his 2023 campaign warning that Nigerians should not support his re-election if electricity supply does not improve during his first term.
Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, highlighted the decline in power supply and rising tariffs since Tinubu took office. He noted that Nigeria’s electricity generation has fallen below 4,000 megawatts, while per capita electricity consumption remains the lowest in Africa at 144 kWh, far below the continental average of 617 kWh.
“During his brief stop in Jos on April 2, 2026, to visit families affected by the recent attack, President Tinubu reportedly said one reason for his 10-minute stay was the airport’s lack of electricity: ‘You have no light here, I fly out in ten minutes,’” Obi wrote. “This shows disregard for promises and a lack of trust at a time when Nigerians endure days without power.”
He concluded that now is the moment for citizens to reject leaders who make empty promises and lack the competence or compassion to serve the people effectively.
