PCRC To Employ 40,000 Nigerians As Special Constabularies

The Police Community Relations Committee has said that it would employ over 40, 000 Nigerians as special constabulary to support in the security of their immediate communities after trainings by the police.

Speaking to the press at the PCRC 2019 Biennial Conference, the
Technical Adviser to Inspector General of Police, Prof. Olu Ogunsakin
Said that, majority of Nigerians still fails to understand what community policing is, basically community policing looks into the community and the police in successful areas, that will lead to developing a mutual relationship. The police alone cannot secure the community successfully without the community involvement.

He said:
“The police has the primary responsibility to secure the community and keep it safe and the community has the secondary responsibility to work hand to hand with the police.
There is a strategy for the police to achieve this which will be clearly stated in this conference:
We are looking at developing partnership with the community and resolve all the issues by identifying the problems together and working together to provide solution”.

According to him the police is introducing intelligence in community policing

“ We are introducing intelligence in community policing to help police and the community.
We are looking forward to getting to know the communities have different issues which are particular to them, identify the issues and solve the problem of each community so everybody is invited to community policing.” He said

Employing 40,000 constables

Prof Ogunsakin said:

“The new strategy looks at employing 40,000 Nigerians within the community space so each local government will be represented, and they will be able to identify their problems and what we are trying to do is called local constabulary, so the police will be able to look up to this volunteer individuals in assisting the police to do this work.

This 40,000 employees will call across all the states and local government areas in Nigeria, they will be supporting each communities.
It is going to get bigger because we cannot just employ all we need at once, as the time goes on we will get more people on board.”

“So we are going to be employing 40,000 as special constabulary and constables, they will now support their local communities, their responsibility will be within that community it will not extend outside the community and they will be reporting to the divisional police, who will be able to work with them.
The police will be responsible for training them to do effective job.” He concluded

TrueTellsNigeria gathered that part of the training will take 3to 4 weeks.
