The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), with the support of Nigeria Policing Programme on Saturday embarked on a walk against cultism, gang violence and substance abuse.
The walk which was led by the Lagos state commissioner of police, CP Zubairu Muazu and all the PCRC members was with the message “ Nigeria Youths Say No to Cultism, Gang, Violence and drug Abuse”.
According to the CP Zubairu Muazu the Police and the public are now in full collaboration in making sure that crime is reduced in the state.
He said: “Today’s event is to go round to solicit people’s support in fighting the war against drug abuse and cultism.
We are out today to sensitize the public on the issues of drug abuse and cultism.
My advice for the people is for them to corporate with the Police and other security agencies, so together we can fight crime”.
Speaking at the walk the state chairman PCRC, Kehinde Showemimo said that the committee will continue with its duty of sensitizing the youth to shun crime and drug abuse.
He said: “We will continue to sensitize our youths and advice them to shun anything crime and drug abuse.
There are other things we do like seminars and workshops to keep them out of crime and all forms of criminality”.
Also speaking at the event the Lagos state intervention officer, Nigeria Policing Programme NPP, Ivy Basil Ofili said that the message of the walk is for everyone to come together in fighting crime in our society.
She said: “ The essence of this walk is to create awareness about the increase in crime and drug abuse within Lagos State.
Our message is that everyone should come together to ensure that we bring a stop to this menace and also to make the youths know that they are the leaders of tomorrow”.
In his view the CSP , Udak Udom, Anti cultism, said that the campaign is aimed at sensitizing the need to avoid criminality and discourage them from joining cult groups.
He said: “ Before the creation of the Anti-cultism unit of the Nigerian Police, cultism was fast becoming endemic. Ever since the establishment of the unit a lot of been achieved in collaboration with PCRC because the youth no longer find cultism attractive.
The campaign is aimed at sensitizing the youth on the need to avoid crime and discourage them from joining cult groups”.
