Organ Harvesting: House of Reps writes UK government, seeks clemency for Ekweremadu

The House of Representatives has asked the UK government and parliament to intervene in the sentencing of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.

The lawmakers want the UK court to “temper justice with mercy” in the sentencing of the lawmaker.

The former deputy senate president, his wife, Beatrice, 56, and Dr. Obinna Obeta, 51, were on March 24, found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey. They are due for sentencing on May 5.

During plenary on Tuesday, May 2, the Nigerian lawmakers asked the federal government to take diplomatic steps to “intervene” in the trial of the former deputy Senate President. The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Toby Okechukwu, a lawmaker from Enugu.

The lawmakers asked the clerk of the lower legislative chamber to “convey” their resolutions in writing to British Embassy, UK government and the parliament.
