The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, celebrated the Day of the Dockworker theme: safety first, efficiency always at the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Sports Ground, Surulere, Lagos.
In his welcome address, the Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Mr. Jibril Abba, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being and safety of dockworkers, while also striving for operational excellence in the ports and terminals. He commended the dockworkers for their hard work and dedication, stating that their contributions were valued and appreciated.
“We are committed to promoting the welfare and interests of our dockworkers, while also working to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of our ports and terminals,” Abba said. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that your safety and well-being remain our top priority.”
The Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, in his address, emphasized the importance of safety and efficiency in the maritime industry. He stated that the agency is committed to supporting dockworkers with the necessary tools, resources, and training to enhance efficiency.
“We believe that safety is not just a priority but a fundamental right,” Mobereola said. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every dockworker returns home safely at the end of each day.”
Mobereola expressed his appreciation to the stakeholders for their support and cooperation. He stated that the agency is committed to promoting the welfare and interests of dockworkers.
“We are grateful for the contributions of our dockworkers and pledge to support them in every way possible,” Mobereola said. “We will continue to work together to uphold the highest standards of safety and efficiency in the maritime industry.”
Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) address emphasizes the importance of safety, efficiency, and collaboration in the maritime industry. The event, which was attended by dignitaries from the maritime industry, featured a parade by dockworkers, who marched in their uniforms, waving flags and banners., a novelty football match, a tug of war competition between Tin Can Port and Apapa Port, and the launch of the reviewed Minimum Standards for the Dock Labour Industry Booklets.
