Nigeria’s Digital Ecosystem Sees Steady Improvements in Network Performance, Says NCC Chief

In a recent statement regarding the release of the Q4 2025 Network Performance Reports, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), highlighted the agency’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s digital landscape through transparent regulation and data-driven insights.

Dr. Maida emphasized that the collaborative effort with Ookla has provided independent evaluations of network performance, reflecting the real-world experiences of Nigerians across urban and rural regions. “Today’s engagement reflects our commitment to transparent, data-driven regulation and the continuous improvement of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he stated.

The Q4 reports reveal significant progress in network quality, particularly in median download speeds, showing improvements in both urban and rural areas compared to the previous quarter. Dr. Maida noted that the disparity in video Quality of Experience between urban and rural areas has decreased, indicating enhanced connectivity even in less developed regions.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in the areas of 5G service availability and upload speed inequities. Dr. Maida confirmed that the NCC is actively working with telecommunications operators to tackle these issues, especially concerning mobile service coverage gaps.

In an impressive demonstration of industry growth, over $1 billion has been invested in 2025, resulting in the establishment of more than 2,850 new sites aimed at expanding coverage and network capacity nationwide. “Much of the progress reflected in today’s reports is a direct outcome of these investments,” Dr. Maida remarked.

Looking ahead, the NCC has secured commitments from operators to exceed their investment levels in 2026, ensuring ongoing improvements in infrastructure. Dr. Maida expressed optimism for future collaboration with industry stakeholders, aiming for better connectivity and service quality, ultimately striving for a more inclusive digital future for all Nigerians.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the NCC’s proactive approach signals a promising trajectory for Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, fostering enhanced connectivity across the nation.
