1. Buhari Still Has Time To Assent To Electoral Bill – Presidency

The presidency on Monday dismissed reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has until Tuesday to sign the Electoral Bill into law.

Truetells Nigeria reports that there has been widespread condemnation of Buhari’s delay in signing the bill.

Many had called on the president to sign the bill as a legacy for his administration.

It was learned that the Nigerian leader had reportedly refused to sign the bill due to the contentious Clause 84 of the document, which violates the constitutional rights of some Nigerians.

The controversial clause bars political appointees from contesting elections and voting as delegates, either at conventions or congresses, after assenting to it

Reacting in a statement to Naija News, Buhari’s Media Adviser, Femi Adesina said the president has 30 days to sign the bill or reject it.

2. APC Fixes New Date For National Convention

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it will be holding its National Convention on March 26, 2022.

Truetells Nigeria reports that the announcement of the new date for the much-anticipated event has overruled its earlier decision to postpone its national convention indefinitely.

It is understood that the new date for the convention was the date earlier slated for the conduct of its zonal congresses across the country.

The party stated that it will begin activities leading to the convention with the conduct of zonal congresses from February 24.

3. Court Rejects Abba Kyari’s Request As Embattled DCP Complains Of Diabetes

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, seeking release from custody.

Truetells Nigeria reports that the embattled former commander of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, had dragged the Federal government to court over his continued detention in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Ruling on the case on Monday, Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo asked Abba Kyari to put the Federal Government on notice of the existence of the suit he instituted against it.

Justice Ekwo refused to order the immediate release of the suspended DCP, ordering him to put the respondent on notice.

According to the judge, all the allegations levelled against the Federal Government are so weighty that the court must give the government opportunity to defend itself.

4. NANS Issues One Week Ultimatum To FG, ASUU To End Strike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) to allow students to resume their classes.

The student association threatened to embark on nationwide protest should the government fail to end the ongoing strike by doing the needful.

NANS President, Sunday Asefon who spoke on Monday in Sokoto State said it won’t be possible that Nigerian students are at home while the office of the Minister of Education and Minister of Labour is open.

5. Money Ritual: FG Gives New Directive To Filmmakers

The Federal Government has in a bid to discourage heinous acts by Nigerian citizens directed filmmakers to henceforth avoid money ritual contents in their movies.

Truetells Nigeria reports that the directive was handed down on Monday by Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.

The Minister while speaking in Abuja said a series of confessions by some money ritual suspects that they learnt the devilish act via social media have called for the desperate move by the government to monitor contents on social platforms.

Mohammed said many citizens have also blamed Nollywood for featuring money rituals in some of its movies, saying this has negatively influenced the vulnerable youth.

6. 2023: Court Dismisses Suit Challenging Atiku’s Eligibility To Contest For Presidency

A suit seeking to challenge the eligibility of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019, Atiku Abubakar has been dismissed by a Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Inyang Ekwo while ruling on the suit on Monday noted that the grounds that the plaintiff instituted the case lacked the locus standi (legal right) to do so.

The plaintiff was described by Justice Ekwo as a “busy body and meddlesome interloper.”

A group, Incorporated Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa, in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/177/2019 had sued Atiku, the People’s Democratic Party, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation as 1st to 4th respondents respectively.

7. Currency In Circulation Hits ₦3.33trn In 2021- CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disclosed that the total Currency in Circulation (CIC) in the country in 2021 was ₦3.33 trillion.

Truetells Nigeria reports that the country’s apex bank made this known in its money and credit report published on its website over the weekend.

The CBN said the all-time high increase represents a ₦418 billion increase compared to ₦2.91 trillion as of December 2020 and also a 19.06 percent rise from ₦2.44 trillion in 2019.

According to the apex bank, the growth in the total currency in circulation reflected the continued dominance of cash in the economy, adding that a greater proportion was in higher denomination banknotes.

8. Abba Kyari Demands ₦500m In Damages From NDLEA

The former head of the IGP Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, has demanded ₦500 million from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as damages over unlawful arrest and detention.

Kyari also directed the agency to tender a written apology to him in two national dailies.

This was stated in a motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/182/22, filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The embattled police officer in the motion filed by his lawyer, C. O. Ikena, also wants an “order restraining NDLEA, Police from detaining or arresting him unlawfully.

Kyari in the motion to enforce his fundamental rights requested that his arrest and detention by the NDLEA “without bringing him before a court of competent jurisdiction from February 12 till date is unlawful, illegal, and a gross violation of his fundamental rights.

This is coming after Kyari sued the Federal Government over his continued detention.

9. 2023 Presidency: Ganduje Endorses Tinubu, Says Northern Nigeria Has No Option

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has endorsed the 2023 presidential ambition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on Monday, the Kano State Governor said it is time for the north to pay Tinubu back for supporting President Muhammadu Buhari.

Represented at the event by the Managing Director of Kano Road Traffic Agency, Dr. Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, Ganduje said he and the entire north are behind the presidential ambition of Tinubu.

10. Corruption: Presidential Aspirant Okorocha, Six Others To Be Arraigned

The lawmaker presenting Imo West Senatorial district, Rochas Okorocha will be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday over corruption charges.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed 17-count charges involving criminal diversion of public funds running into billions of naira and properties against the former governor of Imo State.

The charges filed before the court was signed by one A.O Ikota on behalf of the anti-graft agency.

It was gathered that the commission has served Okorocha and other defendants in compliance with the provisions of the law.

Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo of the Abuja division of the Federal High Court is expected to rule over the case.
