1. Supreme Court: APC Ignores Keyamo, Goes Ahead With Congresses
The Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it would go ahead with its scheduled congresses across the country.
Truetells Nigeria reports that this was made known by the National Secretary of the Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe at an emergency media briefing on Thursday.
Akpanudoedehe urged party members to remain calm as there was nothing to worry over the Supreme Court judgment that gave victory to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday.
2. Abba Kyari Speaks Out On Hushpuppi Bribe Allegation
Nigerian supercop, Abba Kyari has broken silence on the bribe allegation against him by Ramon Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi.
The Police officer in a statement on Thursday said there is no truth in the allegation that he collected money from the embattled Hushpuppi to arrest a co-fraudster.
Truetells Nigeria recalls Hushpuppi had claimed that he bribed Nigeria’s celebrated police chief Abba Kyari, US court documents reveal.
But a statement released on Thursday by Abba Kyari on his personal Facebook page said he and his team only responded to a distress call and no one demanded a single kobo for the services rendered.
The officer added that after investigations showed there was no threat to life, but just business gone bad between Hushpuppi and his friend, the suspect was released on bail.
3. Nigeria Treading Dangerous Path Under Buhari Govt – Bishop Kukah
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has warned that Nigeria is treading a dangerous path under the Muhammadu Buhari government because young people feel disempowered.
Truetells Nigeria reports that the cleric stated this while speaking at an event organized by The Kukah Centre and Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA).
According to Bishop Kukah, democracy and dictatorship cannot coexist as one as to give way for the other.
Kukah stated that Nigerians in 2023 must elect someone with the intellectual capacity and understanding to manage the country.
4. Hushpuppi: IGP Reacts To Abba Kyari’s Indictment, Orders ‘Internal Review’
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Baba Usman Alkali has ordered an internal review into the allegations leveled against DCP Abba Kyari.
Truetells Nigeria recalls arrested fraudster Ramon Abba, popularly known as Ray Hushpuppi had claimed that he bribed Nigeria’s celebrated police chief Abba Kyari, US court documents reveal.
Following the allegation, Court documents disclosed that Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to arrest Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in a multi-million dollar fraud.
Reacting in a statement sent to Naija News on Thursday evening, Police spokesperson, Frank Mba, said the IGP has ordered an internal review.
5. 60 Million Nigerians Register For NIN – NIMC
The Federal Government has revealed that it has registered more than 60 million Nigerians for the unique National Identification Number (NIN) records in the National Identity Database (NIDB).
Truetells Nigeria reports that this was made known on Thursday by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the feat could not have been possible without the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the general public.
“The transformational value of a robust and inclusive foundational Identification system in today’s world cannot be overstated.”
”As a Commission, we’re committed to keeping this momentum of scaling up and speeding up NIN issuance nationwide for better identification, authentication, and improved service delivery,” Adegoke said.
6. Zamfara Assembly Still Planning To Impeach Me, Deputy Governor Raises Alarm
The Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Gusau, has berated the state assembly for planning to impeach him despite the restriction imposed on the lawmakers by a court.
Briefing newsmen at his office on Thursday, the deputy governor said the action of the lawmakers is tantamount to a flagrant breach of law.
He, however, urged well-meaning citizens and people of goodwill toll call the state assembly to order and impress upon them the need to obey court order.
7. We Only Have Three Of Sunday Igboho’s Aides With Us – DSS
The Department of State Services (DSS) has faulted the claims that it has in its custody twelve aides of the Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.
Truetells Nigeria reported earlier that DSS failed to produce Igboho’s associates on Thursday as against a court order for their production made last week.
Speaking on the number of people in its custody as against the 12 reported, DSS’ lawyer, I. Awo on Thursday, July 29 told a Federal High Court in Abuja that the security agency has only three people detained in its custody.
The DSS’ lawyer spoke at the resumed hearing in a fundamental rights enforcement suit by 12 associates of Igboho, who claimed to have been arrested since the DSS raided Igboho’s Ibadan residence on July 1. Awo revealed the names of the detained aides as; Amoda Babatunde (aka Lady K), Diokola Adeyemo Admola and Bamidele Sunday.
The lawyer explained further that the DSS had one Abdullateef Ofeyagbe (the first applicant) in its custody until July 27when he was released.
8. U.S. Court Orders FBI To Arrest Abba Kyari Over Hushpuppi Fraud
An arrest warrant has been issued for the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, who has been linked to fraud with Nigerian internet fraudster, Hushpuppi.
Court documents disclosed that Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to arrest Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in a multi-million dollar fraud.
The FBI this week disclosed that Hushpuppi and Kyari have been friends and were both involved in a conspiracy to launder money.
Hushpuppi had accused the Deputy Commissioner of Police of receiving bribes from him to arrest a member of the syndicate in Nigeria.
9. Federal Govt, Twitter Begin Talks Over Ban
The Nigerian Government and social media giant, Twitter have started talks toward lifting the suspension of the microblogging platform.
According to a source in the Presidency, the suspension of the ban will be lifted when all the issues have been resolved.
The source said: “I can confirm to you that the engagement between the Federal government and Twitter management has commenced.”
“The suspension will be lifted when all the issues of the dispute have been properly trashed out.”
The Federal Government on June 4 suspended Twitter indefinitely, drawing condemnation from Nigerians and the international community.
10. Mailafia Knocks CBN Over Decision To Stop Sale Of FX To BDCs
Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia, has berated the apex bank for stopping the sale of Foreign Exchange (FX) to Bureau De Change (BDCs) operators.
Truetells Nigeria had reported that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, announced on Tuesday that the apex bank will no longer sell dollars and other foreign currencies to Bureau De Change (BDCs) operators across the country.
Speaking after a meeting of the monetary policy committee, Emefiele alleged that the BDCs operators have become a conduit for illegal financial flows working with corrupt people to conduct money laundering in Nigeria.
But in an interview with The Punch on Wednesday, Mailafia said that the ban of foreign exchange to Bureau De Change operators may worsen the value of the naira.
The former presidential candidate added that commercial banks in Nigeria cannot be trusted with the sales of forex.
