Nigerian Footballer Obi Stabbed in Lithuania

A Nigerian footballer, Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, is recovering in hospital after surviving a violent knife attack in Alytus, Lithuania, in an incident authorities have described as racially motivated.

The 20-year-old forward, who plays for FK Dainava, was attacked on Tuesday while his team prepared for an away fixture against Tauras in the country’s second-tier league.

What was meant to be routine pre-match preparations turned into a traumatic ordeal when the young player was reportedly confronted and stabbed in an unprovoked assault. The match was subsequently postponed as officials responded to the incident.

Authorities confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and remains in custody, while investigations are ongoing.

The attack has triggered outrage within the football community, with many calling for justice and improved safety measures for foreign players.

In a statement, the Lithuanian Football Federation condemned the incident, describing it as a “manifestation of racism” and a serious blemish on the country’s reputation.

The federation said the attack went beyond acceptable human conduct, noting that the victim is not just an athlete but a young professional pursuing his career abroad and contributing to his team.

President of the federation, Edgaras Stankevičius, also denounced the act, stressing that racism has no place in football or society. He emphasized that players, regardless of nationality or background, must feel safe and supported, adding that football should unite people rather than divide them.

The incident has disrupted Obi’s early career in Europe. He joined FK Dainava in February 2025 and had been working to establish himself, recently featuring in a 3-3 draw against TransINVEST just days before the attack.

Obi’s case adds to growing concerns about racism faced by African players in European football. Recently, another Nigerian player, Tolu Arokodare, was subjected to racial abuse online after missing a penalty during an English Premier League match involving Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace.

While such incidents range from online harassment to physical violence, they continue to highlight persistent racial prejudice within the global game.
