In a landmark development for competitive gaming in Nigeria, the E-Sports Mobilization and Reconciliation Committee (MRC), on Friday, announced its mandate to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Sports to register electronic sports as a Federation in the country.
At a press conference in Abuja, Dr. John Umoren, Chairman of the MRC, outlined the committee’s vision for the future of e-sports.
“Our goal is to harness the potential of electronic sports to drive investment, create jobs, and contribute to Nigeria’s GDP.”
The MRC’s plan includes a series of strategic activities aimed at mobilizing stakeholders, reconciling differences, and organizing elections for the leadership of the new federation.
These steps are deemed critical for overcoming the current challenges faced by the e-sports community in Nigeria.
“The world is rapidly evolving with digital and technological advances, and e-sports is at the forefront of this movement.
“Nigeria must not be left behind. We must establish a federation that represents our nation on the world stage,” Dr. Umoren continued.
The committee highlighted the urgent need for a proactive approach to e-sports, which has been professionally structured and recognized globally.
The MRC expressed its commitment to building a world-class E-Sports Federation that can attract top-notch competitions and partner with the world’s best sports brands.
Concerns were raised about the current leadership trends in e-sports, which are seen as an obstacle to the growth of a formidable e-sports presence both locally and internationally.
In response, the MRC has resolved to form a neutral committee to create an inclusive environment for all stakeholders.
“We invite all stakeholders to join us in this journey, to reconcile any differences, and to work towards a consensus that will benefit the administration of e-sports in Nigeria,” added Dr. Umoren.
The committee’s formation and activities have received strong support from the Federal Ministry of Sports Development.
Dr. Umoren extended his gratitude to the ministry for their confidence and reiterated the MRC’s dedication to carrying out its mandate with equity, fairness, and the spirit of sportsmanship.
With this significant step, Nigeria is poised to join the ranks of nations embracing the economic and social benefits of e-sports.
For further information and updates on the MRC’s progress, stakeholders and interested parties are encouraged to follow the developments as they unfold in the coming months.
