The 5th Annual Colloquium Lecture, held in honour of Pastor Ituah Ighodalo’s 64th birthday at Trinity House, Lagos, witnessed a significant moment as he was officially decorated as a Patron of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC).
The event, graced by dignitaries and sports enthusiasts, highlighted Pastor Ighodalo’s enduring commitment to national development and his unwavering support for the growth of sports in Nigeria.
In his goodwill message, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, the President General of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, commended the insightful discussions delivered during the lecture, emphasizing their relevance in addressing Nigeria’s progress. He further lauded the NFSC’s long-standing contributions to football, recalling its recognition as the best football supporters’ club by FIFA in 1994 and 1996, as well as the best in Africa in 2006, 2008, and 2010.
Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, in his acceptance speech, expressed deep appreciation for the honour bestowed upon him, acknowledging the immense responsibility that comes with the title. “Honestly, you have made me very happy. I know this comes with a lot of responsibility, and I am committed to supporting this great club,” he stated.
He praised the NFSC for its discipline, commitment, and patriotic zeal, affirming that their unwavering support for Nigerian football has been a source of national pride.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s football landscape, Pastor Ighodalo underscored the need for merit-based selections in sports and leadership, stating that excellence must take precedence over sentiments such as tribalism and favoritism. He further pledged his support toward the club’s upcoming 70th-anniversary celebrations, urging well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to ensuring a grand and successful event.
The Nigeria Football Supporters Club, established in 1955, has played a crucial role in fostering unity and passion for football in Nigeria. Initially formed to support the national football team, known then as the “Red Devils,” the NFSC has since grown into a globally recognized organization with a reputation for its vibrant and electrifying presence at football matches worldwide.
Over the decades, it has weathered challenges, including leadership transitions, while evolving to support grassroots football and broader sports development initiatives.
Under the leadership of its National Chairman, Ambassador Reverend Samuel Ikpea, the NFSC has continued to receive accolades from FIFA and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its dedication to promoting Nigeria’s image through sports. With members distinguished by their colourful attire and enthusiastic chants, the club remains an integral part of Nigeria’s football culture.
The decoration ceremony was attended by several esteemed members of the NFSC, including Dr. Rafiu Ladipo and Ambassador Reverend Samuel Ikpea, High Chief Darlinghtyn Momoh Umoru, alongside other key stakeholders and supporters of Nigeria football. The event not only celebrated Pastor Ighodalo’s birthday but also reinforced the importance of sports in national unity and youth development.
