Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service’s Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ intercepted two live pangolins being illegally transported along the Kano–Jigawa axis on Thursday, in an operation the service says highlights its growing focus on combating wildlife trafficking.
The seizure occurred at about 10:00hrs during a routine stop-and-search as officers conducted a proactive enforcement sweep. The vehicle was stopped by FOU Zone ‘B’ operatives and the animals were found inside. Each pangolin was placed in an appropriate cage and taken to the Unit’s headquarters in Kaduna for safekeeping and further examination. Officials said each animal weighed about 15 kilograms.
Comptroller Aminu Sule of FOU Zone ‘B’ confirmed the operation and said the seizure was carried out under the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), noting that international and national laws prohibit trade that threatens species’ survival.
“This seizure sends a clear message that Zone ‘B’ will not be a transit point for wildlife traffickers,” Comptroller Sule said, announcing that a full-scale investigation has been ordered to determine the source of the pangolins and their intended destination.
Pangolins are among the world’s most trafficked mammals, sought for their scales and meat in illegal markets. The interception is the latest in a series of wildlife enforcement actions by Nigerian authorities intended to curb illegal trade and protect the country’s biodiversity.
The Nigeria Customs Service reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental laws and international treaties as it continues operations aimed at disrupting networks involved in the illicit wildlife trade. Investigations are ongoing and the Unit has not yet released information about any suspects or potential charges.
