The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved the appointment of Sherifat Adegbenro as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), marking another leadership change at the utility firm.
In a statement issued on Monday, the commission said the decision is in line with the corporate governance code guiding Nigeria’s electricity supply industry. It noted that the appointment is aimed at maintaining stability in the company’s leadership pending the selection of a substantive CEO.
Adegbenro takes over from Wola Joseph-Condotti, who assumed the role in January 2026 but exited after less than three months in office.
Since its privatisation in 2013, EKEDC has experienced multiple leadership transitions. Its pioneer Managing Director, Oladele Amoda, led the company until 2019, after which Adeoye Fadeyibi took over and served until 2022. Tinuade Sanda was appointed in March 2022, but her tenure ended in March 2024 following a contentious removal and reinstatement episode that attracted regulatory attention.
Following that crisis, Rekhiat Momoh was appointed Acting CEO during a period of boardroom and regulatory intervention.
The frequent leadership changes have also coincided with shifts in the company’s ownership structure. Transgrid Enerco later acquired a controlling stake in EKEDC, taking over board control from West Power & Gas Limited (WPG), a move that preceded the short-lived tenure of Joseph-Condotti.
With Adegbenro now leading the company in an acting capacity, focus is expected to shift toward stabilising operations and strengthening governance amid ongoing reforms in the power sector.
Before her appointment, Adegbenro served as Deputy CEO, having earlier risen from the position of Chief Audit and Compliance Officer. She brings over 20 years of experience in audit, enterprise risk management, and business process optimisation.
Her career includes leading audit engagements, driving process improvement initiatives, and overseeing the implementation of operational policies aimed at enhancing corporate performance.
She is also known for her expertise in enterprise risk and fraud management, having implemented governance frameworks across various sectors to improve efficiency and accountability.
Adegbenro joined EKEDC in 2015, where she played a key role in strategic, risk-based internal audits and investigations, positioning her at the centre of the company’s oversight and performance systems.
