As President Buhari departed Nigeria for the UK on Tuesday March 30 for his medical checkup, the Presidency has said that he doesn’t need to transmit power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Some Nigerians including Dino Melaye had earlier in the day called on the President to transmit power to Osinbajo since he will be out of the country till the second week of April.
While appearing on Channels TV this night March 30, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said it is not necessary for the President to hand over power to Osinbajo.
When asked if the President had handed over power to Osinbajo, Garba said;
“He (Buhari) will continue from wherever he is.
The requirement of the law is that the President is going to be absent in the country for 21 days and more, then that transmission is warranted. In this particular instance, it is not warranted.” he said
Garba mentioned that there is absolutely no emergency in President Buhari’s medical trip and that this is just a routine check-up with his doctors whom he has known for over 30 years.
