Many feared dead as vehicle veers off Third Mainland Bridge and plunges into Lagoon

A vehicle plunged into the lagoon in Lagos State after skidding off the newly rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge.

An as yet undetermined number of people lost their lives in the tragic incident.

The fatal accident happened on Wednesday, Eid-el-fitri, when Nigerian Muslims celebrated the end of Ramadan.

One Akinola Adeniyi, who claimed to have witnessed the unfolding of the incident, disclosed that the accident happened around 11.30am when the yet to be identified vehicle on the Iyana-Oworo route to the island suddenly plunged into the lagoon.

According to Adeniyi, the accident was caused by excessive speed on the part of the driver of the unfortunate vehicle.

The rescue team, including men of the Lagos State Emergency Management LASEMA and the police, among others, arrived at the scene for the rescue mission.

The incident caused a traffic jam on the third mainland bridge to the Island.

Meanwhile, LASEMA said the agency is still in the process of determining those who were involved in the accident.
