In a significant operation aimed at combating smuggling and protecting public health, the Customs General Controller (CGC) announced the seizure of 16 containers laden with arms, ammunition, and prohibited pharmaceutical products at the Apapa Command. This event marks another critical step in the ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria’s borders.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the CGC highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration, emphasizing the recent partnerships with the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). “These preventive anti-smuggling activities are not only part of our core mandate but also reinforce our commitment to ensuring that harmful substances do not enter our commercial ecosystem,” he stated.

The seized containers included a variety of dangerous items, such as expired medications, prohibited drugs, and even firearms. Among the notable finds was a container that contained over 200 cans of cannabis from Canada, along with multiple firearms and ammunition. The import was falsely declared as vehicles, showcasing the lengths to which smugglers will go to bypass regulations.

The CGC reiterated the relentless efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to thwart the operations of what he referred to as “merchants of death.” “Despite our campaigns and successful seizures, these individuals continue to target Apapa Port. However, they have consistently failed,” he remarked.

In addition to the drugs and weapons, other seizures included containers of expired food products and unregistered pharmaceuticals, all posing significant health risks to unsuspecting Nigerians. The total estimated value of the seized items stands at over 10 billion naira.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the firearms and prohibited drugs, while additional arrests were made for those involved in smuggling frozen poultry products. The CGC assured the public that all suspects would face the full extent of the law.

“Our vow to protect the national economy and the well-being of our citizens remains unshaken,” the CGC concluded. “We will continue to deliver uncompromising enforcement, ensuring that those who seek to harm our country will face justice.”

This operation underscores the NCS’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria against illicit imports and maintaining the health and safety of its citizens. As the battle against smuggling continues, the message is clear: criminal elements will face relentless opposition from law enforcement.
