Former Ghanaian President John Mahama has said he wants Nigeria to perform better economically so that fewer Nigerians will feel the need to move to Ghana.
Speaking in a recent comment on regional migration and West African relations, Mahama noted that Ghana and Nigeria are closely linked, adding that Nigeria’s large population naturally influences movement within the sub-region.
He explained that with Nigeria’s population size, even a small percentage of people migrating can place pressure on neighbouring countries like Ghana. According to him, this is why he often wishes Nigeria well.
“If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well. When you have a country of over 200 million people as your neighbour, you want them to do well so that fewer of them move to a smaller country like Ghana,” he said.
Mahama also referenced historical and cultural ties between the two countries, noting that many Ghanaians and Nigerians share ancestral links and long-standing migration patterns across the region.
His comments have sparked discussion online about migration, economic development, and the long-standing relationship between both West African nations.
