What Is a Political Party?
Well, here is a brief definition of what a political party is. A political party is an organized group of people with the intention to secure the people’s mandate to control the government.
The main aim of a political party is to have its party candidate contest and win elections. There are three types of political parties, which are;
Ideological parties
Class parties and
Mass parties.
Most of the political parties always have party rivals or anti-parties and this makes it more like a competition and struggles for power.
Political parties also have their functions in society; socializing the people and educating the masses is part of their functions.
The type and structure of the system used in Nigeria give room for a multiparty system that doesn’t completely give room for a single party to run for any election without an opposition party. This is why we have more than enough on the list of political parties in Nigeria.
Well, I have for you the list of all parties in Nigeria which I have prepared for you below.

Back in the 1920’s, during the first republic, the NNDP (Nigeria National Democratic Party) was the first political party to be founded in Nigeria.
It was founded in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay, popularly known as one of the fathers of Nationalism in Nigeria.
The emergence of the NNDP was a result of the introduction of the Clifford Constitution in 1922 which gave 3 seats to Lagos and only one seat to Calabar in the legislative council.
Although, the NNDP wasn’t a national party it brought awareness among the people upon the struggle for independence.
Some years later, the Nigeria Youth Movement (NYM) was formed in 1932 and featured some characters like Samuel Akinsanya and Earnest Ikoli.
The NYM had to compete with the NNDP which also made Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Nnamdi Azikwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo join the movement and began a multiparty system in Nigeria. Other political parties also joined including NCNC, AG (Action group), and NPC.
During the second republic, the military government came into power, banned politics, and ruled for 13 years before handing it over to the civilian regimes.
In that action, a lot of political parties saw it as a chance rise up again but only 5 out of them were successfully registered and the 5 political parties were the GNPP, PRP, NPP, UPN, and NPN.
Thereafter some time, the military took over again and banned politics again but under the leadership of General Ibrahim Babangida – one of the richest politicians in Nigeria in 1989, politics was unbanned and 13 associations were formed.
Only two out of these associations were to be registered by the NEC (National Electoral Commission) which is presently called INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission).
Some months later that same year, the Armed Forces of the Ruling party (AFRP) rejected the whole 13 associations including the selected two parties which were to be registered, and then formed 2 new political parties instead, namely; SDP (Socio Democratic Party) and NRC (National Republican Convention).
These two parties started the new era of political parties in Nigeria which began to add in Numbers till today.
