A land grabbing scandal has erupted at the Deeper Life Church located at 32, Post Office Street, off Abiodun, Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos State. The controversy centers around allegations by Mrs. Mope Obasa, a businesswoman, who claims that the church sent assassins to kill her over a disputed piece of land.
Mrs. Obasa asserts that the land was allocated to her mother, Mrs. J. Obasa, by the Lagos State Government in 1980 as a token of appreciation for her mother’s dedicated service as a leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). According to Mrs. Obasa, she has invested heavily in the property, building a shop with goods valued at over ₦50 million.
She alleges that church representatives attempted to claim ownership of the land, despite her offering documentation to prove her ownership. “They met me on the land and claimed it was theirs,” she stated, claiming that negotiations turned hostile.
The situation escalated when Mrs. Obasa alleged that the church hired notorious land grabber ‘Saka No Person’ to carry out a hit on her. “They sent people to kill me,” she said, describing a narrow escape from her would-be assassins. Reports suggest that church members issued threats against her life unless she vacated the land.
Recently, tensions culminated in violence as her shop was demolished by individuals she claims were affiliated with the church. “They came with thugs and bulldozers,” she lamented, reporting injuries to herself and others during the demolition.
Investigations by journalists revealed that armed hoodlums had been stationed at the site, intimidating anyone who approached. The matter had previously been reported to the Olosan Police Station, where Mrs. Obasa told the DPO that “Saka No Person” had attacked her and even strangled her only son.
The DPO ordered her release for medical treatment following the attack. Local residents expressed outrage at the church’s actions, suggesting that this is not the first incident involving land grabbing by the organization.
As the situation develops, Mrs. Obasa remains resolute in her fight for justice. “I will not back down,” she declared. “I will fight for what is rightfully mine, no matter the cost.”
The case has since been transferred to the Ikeja Police Command, where a thorough investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, Mrs. Obasa, who has incurred almost ₦500,000 in medical expenses, is calling for Nigerian citizens to support her in her difficult plight against what she describes as the intimidation tactics of the Deeper Life Church.
Despite efforts to engage church representatives for comments, journalists have reportedly been chased away from the premises. The case raises significant questions about the role of religious institutions in land disputes and the necessity for authorities to take action against exploitative practices.
