Rights Groups Slam Minister Keyamo Over Unconstitutional Appointment of KWAM 1 Amid Controversy

Two prominent Nigerian rights organizations, the Coalition Against Corruption and Bad Governance (CACOBAG) and the Campaign for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (CCHR), have condemned the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), for allegedly breaching the 1999 Constitution by appointing Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for airport security. This decision follows KWAM 1’s involvement in an unruly incident at an airport, raising concerns over unequal treatment in the aviation sector.

In a joint statement, the groups voiced their outrage at what they described as “gross discrimination” after a female passenger, Miss Comfort Emmanson, faced arrest and humiliation over a similar incident. They argue that the differing treatment of KWAM 1 and Emmanson violates constitutional protections against discrimination.

The organizations cited multiple legal frameworks, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to bolster their claims. They demanded a public apology from Ibom Air, reinstatement of the suspended pilots, and a thorough police investigation into KWAM 1’s conduct.

The statement questioned Minister Keyamo’s commitment to constitutionalism, asserting that his actions set a “dangerous precedent” by suggesting that some public figures are above the law. They stressed that “the rule of law does not discriminate,” urging that all individuals be held accountable regardless of their status.
