Lagos Lawmakers Make Friendly Visit to DSS Office

 

Lawmakers from the Lagos House of Assembly on Thursday made a friendly and visit to the Lagos office of the Department of State Security (DSS).

The visit was aimed at establishing cordial relationships between the lawmakers and the security agents in the wake of the crisis rocking the House.

It is recalled that the lawmakers recently removed Mudasiru Obasa as the Speaker on allegations of financial misconduct and sworn-in the deputy speaker, Meranda as the new speaker.

The visit by the lawmakers also followed the questioning and detention of some members of the House by the DSS following a petition written by Obasa who is challenging his removal by the lawmakers.

According to reliable sources, over 30 lawmakers made the visit to the DSS which lasted for more than six hours on Thursday, January 29, 2025, regarding a petition filed by Obasa concerning his removal as Speaker on January 13.

The DSS investigation followed Obasa’s claims that his ousting was politically motivated and involved misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

Despite the lengthy questioning, all the lawmakers left the security agency office same Thursday evening, around 7 pm.

The lawmakers who chose not to provide any details hinted on the nature of the the petition itself but described the scenario as a family affair and a “friendly visit”.

Obasa, who had been Speaker since 2015, was removed by a majority vote of the lawmakers on January 13, 2025, amid serious allegations of misconduct.

His removal came during a period when he was absent from Nigeria, having traveled to the United States.

Upon his return to Lagos on Saturday, Obasa strongly rejected the corruption allegations leveled against him and criticized the process that led to his ouster.

He urged the lawmakers to follow the “right process” in addressing his removal, while maintaining that he had been unfairly targeted.

Obasa’s removal and the ongoing political tensions have sparked significant controversy in the Lagos State political landscape, with calls for transparency in how leadership changes are handled within the legislative body.

The situation remains fluid, and it is expected that further developments will unfold in the coming days, with lawmakers set to discuss the matter publicly in the Assembly.
