Lagos Assembly wants cooking gas sale regulated

Lagos State House of Assembly has said there is a need to regulate the sale of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, popularly known as cooking gas, in residential areas in order to curb incidents of explosion.

It also stressed the need to embark on aggressive sensitisation programme on the dangers inherent in indiscriminate proliferation of gas outlets.

The resolution, according to a statement, followed a motion moved by a lawmaker representing Ajeromi/Ifelodun Constituency 1, Luqmon  Olumoh.

According to the lawmaker, in as much as the LPG is an essential commodity used for cooking as it cooks faster, it is highly inflammable and requires extra precautions in its handling, storage and usage.

He noted that many retail outlets had sprung up in Lagos, mostly in residential areas and markets, adding that the recent gas explosion in Agejunle led to the loss of lives and property.

Olumoh resolved to call on the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources and the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Protection Agency to enforce the provision of Sections 184 and 187 of the Environmental Protection and Management Law 2017.
