Soldiers on election duty in the Igalamela local government area of Kogi State early Saturday morning intercepted and arrested the council chairman and several supporters of the All Progressives Party (APC) for being in possession of ammunition and lots of cash.
The soldiers impounded the cash running into millions of naira as well as a large cache of ammunition.
This comes as Kogo residents go to the polls to vote in a new governor for the state.
The money and the ammunition were packed in several ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags and the ammunition.
The money and ammunition were allegedly meant for use during the election.
A video seen by SaharaReporters shows the suspects sitting on the floor near an army checkpoint.
In a viral video, both the council chairman and his gang were seen expressing regrets and pleading for forgiveness but the soldiers did not oblige.
They reportedly confessed that the money was meant for distribution to voters at different polling units within the local government area and Idah area during the governorship election.
SaharaReporters reliably gathered that there were moves by Governor Yahaya Bello and his officials to secure their release as sources said efforts were being made to move the suspects to the state capital but the military authorities have insisted that they would suspects be held with the recovered items until after the election.
