Katsina Bandit Leader Kachallah Muhammad Contacts Family of Abducted Retired Major General Rabe Batsari

In a rare development in northern Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis, notorious Katsina bandit leader Kachallah Muhammad has established communication with the family of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar Batsari, who was abducted along with his wife last Saturday.

According to sources, the bandit kingpin contacted the General’s family on the morning of June 1, 2026, amid rising concerns over banditry in parts of Katsina State. The retired officer and his spouse were reportedly ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area, a route residents have long described as unsafe due to frequent bandit attacks. Witnesses said gunmen blocked their vehicle, opened fire, and abducted the couple into a nearby forest.

A senior local government official in Batsari, speaking anonymously due to security risks, confirmed he personally spoke with Major General Batsari during the facilitated communication.

“Major General Rabe is hale and hearty, and his wife is also fine,” the official said. He added that the retired officer reassured his family that they were being adequately cared for by their captors, easing some anxiety among relatives and residents.

During the conversation, Kachallah Muhammad reportedly demanded the release of his relatives, allegedly held by Nigerian security authorities. He also expressed willingness to return to the negotiation table, signaling potential dialogue aimed at restoring peace in Matazu and neighboring communities.

Relatives and local residents have expressed deep concern over the abduction, describing it as a severe blow to the family and the community, which has benefited from the General’s years of service and philanthropy. Family member Mariya Ibrahim said the retired officer was traveling to Katsina for a wedding when he and his wife were kidnapped.

“He served this country with dedication and deserves protection even in retirement. We want him and his wife rescued alive and unharmed,” Ibrahim said.

The incident highlights the persistent threat of banditry across northern Nigeria, particularly in Katsina State, and has renewed calls for enhanced security on vulnerable roads. Authorities are actively engaging in efforts to secure the safe release of Major General Batsari and his wife.
