The Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Mr. Ahmed Kuru, has allegedly allocated at least 14 employment slots to members of the House of Representative committee investigating the corporation’s failure to observe Federal Character principle in the recruitment of its staff, SaharaReporters has learnt.
Recall that prior to the House Committee investigation, AMCON was accused of lopsided recruitment of staff with about 70 of the recruited staff from the northern region of the country.
The House Committee is currently investigating job racketeering in government parastatals that have been engaging in extortion of money from heads of federal ministries, departments and agencies, including those of tertiary institutions across the country.
The ad-hoc committee of 39 lawmakers was constituted following a motion moved on July 5, 2023, by Oluwole Oke, a House of Representatives member under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing the Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State.
Reps Oke had urged the House to investigate the monumental corruption surrounding personnel recruitment in government parastatals across the country.
But an insider source in AMCON told SaharaReporters on Friday that the House committee quietly invited the AMCON MD for interaction with selected members of the committee for presentation on employment by the agency, against the previous public engagement of agencies’ heads by the committee.
The source said that Mr. Kuru instead placated the committee members with 14 employment slots for names to be nominated by the committee members.
The insider source revealed that on Monday, September 25, the 14 employees for the compromised employment slots were hurriedly employed and resumed duties as staff of the corporation without offices or desks as there was no vacancy or job description guiding their recruitment “but desire of Kuru to compromise the committee with the gratification.”
“Mr Kuru has reached out to the committee members with 14 employment slots for names to be nominated by the committee members. Already on Monday, September 25, the 14 employees for the compromised employment slots have been asked to resume duties as staff of the corporation without offices or desks.
“There was no vacancy or job description guiding their recruitment but they were given the jobs because of the desire of Kuru to compromise the committee with the gratification,” the source explained.
