IAEA Urges Restraint After Missile Strikes Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Wednesday confirmed that Iranian authorities reported a missile impact at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the country’s only operational nuclear facility, with no casualties or damage recorded.

According to TRUETELLS Nigeria reports, the Vienna-based agency said the incident occurred on Tuesday evening and did not disrupt the plant’s operations.

In a statement shared on social media, the IAEA said, “The International Atomic Energy Agency has been informed by Iran that a projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr NPP on Tuesday evening. No damage to the plant or injuries to staff reported.”

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi emphasized the need for caution to prevent escalation and potential nuclear risks. “We reiterate our call for restraint during the conflict to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident,” the statement added.

Located in southwestern Iran, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant remains the country’s sole operational nuclear reactor, connected to the national grid since 2011.

Iran has been under strict U.S. sanctions since 2018, after Washington withdrew from a nuclear agreement that had offered sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear programme. While Western nations continue to express concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Tehran maintains that its programme is purely for peaceful purposes.
