The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who left governance for days to party with an Abuja-based businesswoman and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, who celebrated her 50th birthday at the Caribbean Island of Grenada has returned to Nigeria.
Mr Sanwo-Olu reportedly flew in a private aircraft to the Caribbean Island and took residency in one of the most expensive resorts in the world.
PREMIUM TIMES exclusively reported that while the Mandilas building was burning in Lagos on January 21 and many Lagosians remained overburdened by poverty and insecurity, Governor Sanwo-Olu was revelling at a party at Calivigny Island, an 80-acre private and exquisite location which costs about $132,000 per night.
The newspaper also reported that while the governor was away for days, many government officials did not know of his whereabouts. Some reportedly claimed he was attending an official engagement in London while some others simply said he was travelling abroad.
According to the paper, organisers rented the Island for seven days, amounting to about $924,000 in total, in addition to other charges.
Mr Sanwo-Olu and other participants alternated between Calivigny Island and Silversand Grenada, an exotic five-year-old seven-star luxury resort located in Grand Anse beach, where some events of the posh celebration were held.
Those familiar with the governor’s itinerary said he left Nigeria on Wednesday, 17 January for Mrs Achimugu’s birthday carnival which began with “a scrumptious welcome breakfast” and “a spectacular dinner with an explosive finish” that day. Other guests had arrived in Grenada on 16 January.
Governor Sanwo-Olu joined the party on 18 January, the third day of the festivity and remained till 23 January, leaving his state without his leadership for days.
Jackson Udeh, the editor of a media platform, Pointblank News, in a post shared on his X handle, titled: “Meet Aisha Achimugu, Gov. Sanwoolu’s lover. The two love birds spent Lagos billions partying in Grenada,” also shared pictures and videos showing of the party.
The post partly read: “Aisha Achimugu, the wife of the first Nigerian to die of Covid-19 went on a love boat trip to the island of Grenada with her lover, Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, partying and spending Lagos tax payers money in billions to celebrate Aisha’s 50th birthday.
“Sanwoolu, a serial womanizer who once had a fling with embattled former Minister, Beta Edu, traveled to Grenada on the birthday bash of his new lover, Aisha, renting a private island where they did what lovers do. Pictures and videos of the two love birds in Grenada are being expected from my contacts who saw them. More details coming!”
To do some damage control, Sanwo-Olu posted on X that he was St. George’s, Grenada to have discussions with its Prime Minister.
He, however, added that he also attended social events during the trip.
He said, “Last weekend in St. George’s, Grenada, I presented Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell with a miniature of the Blue Line Rail and we engaged in extensive discussions on various aspects of our bilateral relations, focusing particularly on tourism, agriculture, and other economic interests that could benefit both our regions.
“Prime Minister Mitchell also shared exciting plans for Grenada’s upcoming 50th- anniversary celebrations in February. It was a productive and enriching exchange, setting the stage for deeper collaboration between our regions.”
“Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend some social events, further strengthening the ties between our two nations,” he added.
Several videos from SaharaReporters obtained on Thursday show Mrs Achimugu flaunting different dresses and crispy dollar notes.
