On Monday, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, officially inaugurated the construction of the Agbor/Uromi Junction Flyover during a groundbreaking ceremony filled with celebration and community spirit. The project, aimed at alleviating chronic traffic congestion and improving road safety at a notorious junction, represents a vital investment for the region’s infrastructure.
In his address, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the flyover’s significance in preserving lives and boosting economic activities throughout Delta State and beyond. He explained that the Agbor/Uromi Junction has become synonymous with danger, citing years of accidents and traffic chaos at the intersection of vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians on this busy federal highway.
“This project is not just about building a flyover,” the governor stated. “It is a necessary response to the urgent need for better traffic management and road safety at this perilous intersection.”
The design and construction have been awarded to renowned engineering firm Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, with a projected completion timeline of 14 months. The flyover will span 1.3 kilometers along the Uromi–Agbor Highway and feature dual carriageways, ramps, roundabouts, drainage systems, kerbs, and solar-powered streetlights, all aimed at creating a safer and more sustainable travel environment.
Accompanied by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme and various government officials, the governor highlighted the project’s strategic importance, noting it serves as a crucial link between the Eastern and Western parts of the Niger Delta, as well as a gateway to the North. “Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or vice versa must pass through this route. Its importance to the national economy cannot be overstated,” he remarked.
Oborevwori also underscored the employment opportunities the project would create, which will benefit engineers, artisans, transporters, and food vendors alike. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to balanced development, revealing an injection of N100 billion into infrastructure across the state, with N4 billion allocated to each of the 25 local government areas.
“We award contracts strictly on merit and competence. Excellence will always attract further patronage,” he assured, expressing confidence that the flyover will be completed on time.
Former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa praised the Agbor/Uromi Junction Flyover as a monumental project and commended Oborevwori for ensuring continuity and progress in the state’s development plans.
In a brief speech, Engr. Friedrich Wieser, Regional Manager of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, thanked the state government for the opportunity to deliver quality infrastructure. “We do not take this trust for granted,” he stated, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to transforming transport infrastructure in the region.
As the project unfolds, it is expected to significantly enhance mobility, reduce travel times, and safeguard the lives of countless Nigerians who rely on this critical route daily.
